Summary:In the past, Filipino nurses who have gone to England to work have experienced unfavorable working conditions and unequal treatment by their British employers. However, with the enforcement of the anti-discrimination legislation called the Race Relations Act (RRA) 1976, there is the prospect of fair and equal treatment based on ability and not on color or race. This study aims to describe the working conditions of the Filipino nurses at present and determine whether these are connected to RRA 1976. A survey in form of the questionnaire was administered to Filipino nurses currently working in England. Sixty-six Filipino nurses took part in the survey, which contained questions regarding the general, economic, and socia working conditions of the nurses as employees of hospitals in England. To establish points of comparison with regards to working conditions, a similar questionnaire form was also answered by fourteen British nurses. Thus, the researchers would be able to see whether differences exist or not between the two groups of respondents. In addition to this, the provision of the RRA 1976 that were applicable to the study were singled out as part of the data. Furthermore, various contracts of employment for nurses from several hospitals in England were studied to find out if the terms of employment in these match the actual employment conditions. The questionnaire results were then tabulated, and analysis was performed on these results, linking them to the terms of employment in the contracts as well as to the provisions of the RRA 1976. The analysis then led to the discussion of the implications of the said act, whether it was being practiced or not, and to what extent was the existing awareness of the Filipino nurses of such an act.
