Motivational factors: a descriptive study on Filipino eldest working students of urban poor families.

One major difference between individualist culture country (Western) and the collectivist culture country (Eastern) like the Philippines is the degree of family influence. Here in the Philippines, family plays an important role in the lives of Filipino, thus, the researchers wanted to know how the influence of family is manifested in terms of motivating a Filipino individual to work and study at the same time especially in times of deprivation. From the related literature (in Filipino context), the researchers were able to formulate a hypothesis that Filipinos are most probably motivated to work and study at the same time due to financial deprivations, being the eldest child, values taught inside the family, gender role and gender development. Employing the qualitative approach, the researchers conducted the study by interviewing 31 (16 females and 15 males) Filipino eldest working students ranging from 15 to 21 years of age and belonging to the urban poor family regarding the factors that motivate them to work and study at the same time. Based on the result, belonging to urban poor families and being the eldest child have motivated them to work and study at the same time in order to help provide the financial needs of the family. However, in terms of the gender as a motivating factor, there is almost no difference between the responses of both genders regarding their responsibilities toward their parents and younger siblings. The roles of the females have extended from the traditional roles to being the breadwinner and financial provider of her families like males.
