Summary: | The large outflow of Filipinos to work in other countries in the past years have caused the need for a study to be conducted on their most salient difficulties in the foreign land. This particular study aimed to find out the cultural difficulties that Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) experienced in Germany. The theory of Social Learning, which had Albert Bandura as main proponent, was used by the researchers to guide them in evaluating if the behavior of the workers in Germany conformed to an existing sociological framework.
The subjects in the study were comprised of thirteen Filipinos who were chosen through purposive sampling. They have all worked in Germany after its reunification but are now currently residing in Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces. Relying mostly on data generated from the interviews with the OFWs, the study was descriptive in nature with a qualitative design. A pilot-test was conducted on two workers before the interviews were administered to the samples.
Data analysis yielded the trend that the OFW, generally, did not encounter great difficulty with regards to the language, values, beliefs, and norms in Germany. The generalizability of the study was constrained by many factors foremost of which were the differences in the personal backgrounds of the subjects. Therefore, one recommendation of the researchers is to replicate the study in the future but should utilize subjects, which have more or less similar backgrounds. |
