Description
Summary:The soil characteristic of a particular location is a factor that foundation engineers consider prior to design and construction of a particular structure. Because of this, exploratory borings are conducted to determine the soil composition, soil bearing capacity and other important data needed for the proper foundation. Without the information gathered from these tests, the engineer will not be able to design the proper foundation for any particular structure. The development of the Geographic Information System-Geotechnical Characteristics of the City of Manila (GIS-GeoManila) will provide an easy access to the geotechnical data needed. The data gathered from previously conducted exploratory borings were inputted into the GIS software for easy access and quick reference purposes. With the use of this database, the engineer is now able to learn about the soil characteristics of a particular site minus the agony of having to contend with piles of paperwork. Furthermore, this system allows the user to easily approximate the characteristics of a site without available geotechnical data by considering the nearest borehole data available. This research is a progressive research. The case and convenience this system has to offer can even be improved by adding more geotechnical data into the database.
