Preventive potential of malunggay (Moringa oleifera) oil extract on the azoxymethane (Aom)-induced aberrant crypt foci (ACF) formation in the colon of ICR mice strain (Mus musculus)

Ching, Laurene Jeanne A. Santos, Carmen Elvira Y. This study aimed to investigate the preventive potential of Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) oil extract on Azoxymethane (AOM)-induced aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the colon of ICR strain mice. Forty two male mice were randomly assigned into six treatment groups with seven mice each. The mice were divided into three negative control groups (Saline only, Saline + Dose 1 M. oleifera oil and Saline + Dose 2 M. oleifera oil), a positive control (AOM only) and two treated groups (AOM + Dose 1 M. oleifera oil and AOM + Dose 2 M. oleifera oil). All groups were given mineral drinking water and food pellets ad libitum. ACF induction with AOM and M. oleifera oil extract administration were carried out for 21 days. Intraperitoneal injections of AOM were given every seven days while the oil extract was given as a food additive every other day. The doses were computed by ratio and proportion using the recommended daily allowance (RDA) per 60 kg human (500mg/day) as basis, with Dose 1 = 0.05 ml and Dose 2 = 0.08 ml. Colon tissue samples from proximal and distal segments were obtained immediately after sacrificing the mice. Approximately 1cm2 of the tissue was obtained for ACF count and the rest was histologically processed for the crypt multiplicity analyses. The same procedure was done during the latency period (Days 22 to 35). Results showed that the M. oleifera doses employed lessened the occurrences of ACFs in a seemingly dosedependent manner, that is, the higher the dose, the lesser the mean ACF count. Less severity, as indicated by percent occurrence of crypt multiplicity, was exhibited more by the distal than the proximal colon which was more pronounced during the latency period. 2012-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/10758 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Moringa oleifera Mice--Behavior Mice as laboratory animals Biology
