Description
Summary:This study aims to determine the mediating role of coping strategy to the relationship of individual self-construal and levels of distress and if there is a relationship between an individual's self-construal and level of distress experienced. The Brief Cope, Individualism and Collectivism Scale and PCL-5 was used in order to measure an individual's coping strategy, individual self-construal and levels of distress, respectively. Out of the 460 participants of the study, 124 (27.0% were male, and 335 (72.8%) were female. This study found that each individual self-construal has a different relationship with levels of distress. This study also found that the coping strategy that an individual uses is a mediating factor to the level of distress experienced by individual. HI was not found to have any effect on the level of distress while VI was the only construal that had a direct relationship with some of the symptoms of distress (i.e. negative changes in cognition and mood, aggression and total distress). HC and VC had an indirect effect on various levels of distress by EFC and/or AC. PFC strategy of coping did not yield significant mediating role for the relationship of individual self-construal and coping strategy. The results show that one's beliefs and views can affect their well-being, with consideration to how they deal with problems. H-V dimensions have an impact on coping as related to power distancing.
