A qualitative study on an adolescent's grieving process over the sudden death of a sibling

This study aims to provide additional knowledge on the phenomena of death, most specifically, on sibling's death. Through the use of a qualitative approach, the researchers examined two points: a) grieving process of an adolescent b) the role of sudden death in the life of an individual and the way he or she relates to family members and peers. Five individuals, 3 males and 2 females, who are in the late adolescence (aged 18 to 23), were interviewed for the study. Results show that Filipino adolescents go through a different grieving process as compared to what western literatures have been mentioning. There is the desire to just focus on the present rather that just reminding oneself of the painful experience. During the collection of data, an interesting concept called meaning making emerged which showed how the participants made sense out of the loss that they have experienced.
