Shifting as a path towards self identity

This study focused on the occurrence of shifting as a common phenomenon in the Philippines. It follows that shifting could be a path for the development of self-identity and is not entirely negative. In order to identify the psychosocial reasons for shifting, 31 students from different colleges and universities in Manila were interviewed. Results showed that students course decisions were affected by influences from other people, their inability to discern which course to pursue and lack of passion for their previous course. As students go through college, they eventually get a clearer idea of which course to take. Though it involves risks, shifting is suggested to be part of the journey towards establishing one's self-identity.
