Summary:In the world of business, change is permanent and competition is fierce. In order to go toeto- toe with the increased competition, the researchers deemed it important to study the determinants of labor productivity, which may give companies a competitive advantage. Four variables were chosen with the help of the related literature, which are: demographic factors, job characteristics, job satisfaction and breadwinner status. A survey was conducted among 124 repacking employees in Joly Foods, Incorporated located in San Mateo Rizal, Philippines. The researchers utilized both quantitative and qualitative measures for analysis to determine if the aforementioned factors have an influence on labor productivity and also to know which among the variables exert the strongest influence on labor productivity. Labor productivity was computed quantitatively using a formula that consists of the number of units repacked, work hours etc. and qualitatively using statements that consist of output, quota, etc. The results indicate that demographic factors, job characteristics, job satisfaction and breadwinner status exert significant effects on qualitative labor productivity. On the other hand, only demographic factors and breadwinner status have significant effects on quantitative labor productivity. This shows that breadwinner status can influence both qualitative and quantitative labor productivity. However, breadwinner status was found to have an inverse relationship with labor productivity, contrary to literature. This has a socio-cultural explanation, with Filipinos having a perceived difficulty in balancing their career and family life. The recommendations for business owners, and more importantly for Joly Foods, are to maintain salary and provide benefits, provide a competitive and effective work environment, and recognize breadwinners and give them activities. On the other hand, breadwinner employees are recommended to balance their effort and time between their job and family, to follow work behaviors of non-breadwinner employees, and to be motivated and be more enthusiastic in the workplace.
