The social perception of married couples on the concept of ander in the Philippines

In this study, the researchers focused on the Philippines concept of under-de-saya which is also known as ander. This can be defined by the continuous tormenting of a wife towards her husband. This can be done through different ways such as nagging and harassing an individual (Ang, De Jesus, & Ong, 2001). Ander also involves power in the relationship between two individuals wherein there is one who exerts influence and another who is influenced (Gerber, 1988). The researchers conducted 4 focused group discussions (FGD) with the intent to gain knowledge on social perceptions and different situations wherein this concept emerges in a marital relationship. The FGDs where conduced in both the urban and rural areas with corresponding socio-economic statutes of low and middle to know whether there are differences on their concept of ander. Participants for this study included 12 married males and 12 married females. Through data gathering, the researchers have derived 8 categories which clearly explain the meaning of ander in the Philippine context.
