Summary: | Ingratiatory behaviors have existed almost since the beginning of time and it has managed to prevail even in today's society. Accordingly, in the Philippines, the concept of sipsip can be considered as related to, but different from, the phenomenon of ingratiation. This research study used mixed method approach in understanding the ingratiator and sipsip behavior in the public and private organization in the Philippines. The meaning of sipsip was constructed through the interviews conducted to the different rank and file employees and supervisors in both organizations. On the other hand, the type of organization, level of ingratiation, style of leadership and career satisfaction were the variables that quantitatively examined through the use of surveys. Results showed that sipsip is a manifestation of ingratiation in the Philippine context for both reflects the main motive in engaging in such behavior: to gain favor and attention. However, sipsip processes unique Filipino characteristics which set it apart from ingratiation. Through the study of sipsip, the uniqueness of the interpersonal relationships in our culture was shown in a different light as the researchers were able to present how the sensitivity of Filipinos to hierarchy and how utang na loob plays a very important part in sipsip behavior. This study also showed the very crucial role of supervisors in sipsip because the effectiveness of such behavior all depends on how they are going to let it affect them. Moreover, results showed that the level of sipsip is higher in public organizations compared to private organizations. Results also showed how sipsip could positively affect career satisfaction. However, sipsip behavior is also found out to be a detrimental factor in an organization for it destroys the relationship among employees and impairs the work within the organization. |
