Summary: | Manufacturing companies apply different structures to satisfy either of the two objects, efficiency or flexibility in customer demands. The structural dimensions differ based on the organizational structure applied. The group examines these significant differences in structural dimensions, trough the framework adopted from Nahm, et al (2003). The group compared REMS Manufacturing (functional structure) and Mr. Freeze Ice (division structure), in terms of nature of formalization, number of layers in the hierarchy, level of horizontal integration, locus of decision making, level of communication and performance. The group gathered data through interview and survey. The results from the interview and the survey show that there are indeed significant differences between two companies in terms of structural dimensions. However, the two companied are not significantly different in terms of horizontal integration. In terms of plant performance, REMS manufacturing has a better performance interns of ROI, but Mr. Freeze is better in terms of sales growth. The paper compares organizational structures and leaves room for future research in terms of strategy which would firmly relate organizational structure to performance. |
