De Guzman, Angelo Clarence S. Go, Adrian Paul N. Regio, Allan Rey E. Maritime transportation has become a crucial factor in the world today due to the ever increasing global trade demands. It has grown to a massive scale from the construction of luxurious cruise liners to gigantic cargo vessels. It has become the choice of transportation of leading cargo companies due to a larger payload delivery. But safety is one of the major problems of the maritime industry; especially in the Philippines where seafaring is the job of thousands of Filipinos. According to recent studies, majority of the cases of maritime accidents are most likely to be caused by human error due to lack of training. The East gate Maritime Training Center is one of the maritime manpower service provider based in Mandaluyong, Philippines. The company itself is not immune to the problems being faced in the maritime industry. The inadequacy of the safety precautions and injury prevention program being taught to the trainees throughout the training program proves to be a major problem. The lecturers do not have a method of simulating lessons and on board scenarios, in effect, trainees do not gain the proper knowledge when faced with given scenarios or precautions, they cannot visualize the proper safety and handling procedures in the course. Learning these precautions are very crucial especially on board the ship because of the danger involved in performing on board tasks. Lecturers cannot also give the students the sense of safety-awareness to know the topics which results to the trainees not skilled enough to understand precautionary measures and may be also inclined to develop a complacent attitude in performing ship tasks and may result to injury or in the worst case, loss of life and property. There are learning theories which can be used to develop a more effective tool in giving safety training to future seafarers. Psycho-neuromuscular Theory will be applied to help the students visualize and gain a grasp of the topic. Situated Learning Theory will help support the visualization theories by giving scenario based learning environment. The topics that will be covered are the precautions and hazards that are involved in the following topics: Lifting/Working at Heights, Enclosed Spaces, Mooring Schemes, and Hot Works, Handling Chemicals. 2012-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/11142 Bachelor's Theses Filipino Animo Repository Shipping--Safety measures Marine accidents-- Prevention Computer Sciences
