Description
Summary:Numerous researchers had conducted studies regarding luck and luck practices however, very little of them connected luck and luck practices to lottery playing. It is crucial to separate the Filipino understanding of luck that may vary from the previous findings of Westerners. Schweder (2000) dictates that Westernized point of view could vary from other parts of the world. With a qualitative research design, 10 respondents from Metro Manila who had been betting in the lottery for at least a year were interviewed about their beliefs on luck, their respective luck practices and the possible implications. Results from the research revealed 3 categories and 7 themes. The categories were Filipino perceptions on luck with themes of fleeting natural phenomenon, unpredictability of arrival and continuous perseverance second is luck practices with themes of personal prayer, selecting of numbers and lucky charms and lastly, implications of luck beliefs and practices with themes of positive thinking and misapplication of luck. The themes were formed using the answers that were similar to the majority of the respondents. It was concluded that belief in luck can be both positive and negative it only depends oh how the individual applies his beliefs.
