Summary:Smartphones are considered as one of the top selling consumer product in the market and one of the most commonly used interactive products today. With this, smartphones companies experience the need to become more competitive in their respective markets. User experience is a growing concept in product design that goes beyond the usability of a device and incorporates the emotions and overall experience of the users as he interacts with the product. Integrating a good UX to the smartphone users experience then becomes a competitive advantage as it allows product designers to design for experience rather than designing for functionality and satisfaction only. Furthermore, it is also important to integrate how the consumers expect their experience to be before even interacting with the smartphone. This is manifested in the formation of the Anticipated Users Experience (AUX) as users create expectations based on what they know from past experience and knowledgeable and the emotions they expect. This research focuses on the UX of smartphones and looks into the significant smartphone features in terms of Device Related, Communications and Interaction Related Features that contribute to UX and the change in perception from the AUX to UX upon product interaction. The influences of age and brand reputation in the perceived significant features were also looked into. The age group is categorized into the Millennial Generation (18-33 years old) and Generation X (34-49 years old). Results were also analysed according to the influence of brand through evaluating the extremities of brand standing in market. Samsung represents the well-known brands in the market while SKK as the less popular brand in the market. An experiment was designed where users will be assigned a smartphone that they will use to accomplish a set of tasks in order to determine the significant smartphone features that contribute to UX and the change in perception from AUX to UX. The subjects for the experiments are assigned to either a Samsung or an SKK smartphone. Data on the expectations of the subjects are collected through the AUX User Experience Questionnaire, where they will rate based on a commercial for Samsung or a product review for SKK. The importance survey is also distributed in order to determine how important the different features of the smartphone are for them. Tasks are to be accomplished by users that will allow them to interact with the smartphone and use the different features. Afterwards, the UX is evaluated through the User Experience Survey. Finally, a satisfaction survey is evaluated where the users satisfaction on the features are rated based on their experience. Validation of the significant features was done through the use of Multi-Linear Regression wherein the results of the satisfaction survey and the user experience questionnaire were compared with each other. Moreover, the change between the AUX and UX was also addressed by getting the difference in score of the AUX and UX, and comparing it against the satisfaction survey through Multi-Linear Regression to determine the significant features for the change in perception from AUX and UX. Results show that the Device Related such as Hardware Keys, Connectivity, Display Size, Utilities, Games, Media, and Document Format Support Communications Related factors such as E-mail, Audio Messaging, Video Call, and Voice Call as well as Interactions Related Factors such as Menu Design and Input Method significantly contribute to the UX and the change in perception from AUX and UX. Also, the differences in age group and brand reputation proved to have an effect on the resulting significant smartphone features. The framework generated can serve as a guide for product designers in prioritizing which smartphone features they should further enhance that will lead to a pleasurable experience for the users. This good overall UX will then serve as basis for his AUX the second time around, increasing brand and profitability on behalf of the smartphone company.
