Description
Summary:This experimental study aimed to examine the effects of text legibility and how physical characteristics of a reading material can affect and improve reading process. Reading comprehension and retention are factors that were sought to be improved by the researchers in this study by varying the web-based reading passages presented to participants with respect to the image presentation, image positioning, and type of background. A total of 141 grade-three students of from a private school were included in the study. The researchers randomly assigned the students to eight (8) conditions: 1) dynamic, apart, plain (DPWI); 2) dynamic, apart, printed (DAPr); 3) dynamic, within, plain (DWPI)' 4) dynamic, within, printed (DAPr); 5) static, apart, plain (SAPI); 6) static, apart, printed (SAPr); 7) static, within, plain (SWPI) ; and 8) static, within, printed (SWPr) condition. The following hypotheses were formulated: (1) there is no significant increase on reading comprehension if image presentation is dynamic, (2) there is no significant increase on reading comprehension if the images are positioned apart-from-texts; (4) there is no significant increase on retention if the images are positioned within-texts, (5) there is no significant increase on reading comprehension if the background of the reading passages is plain; (6) there is no significant increase on retention if the background of the reading passages has prints; (7) there is no interaction effect between image presentation, image positioning, and on comprehension of information; and (8) there is no interaction effect between image presentation, image positioning, and type of background on retention of information. The apparatus, specifically the stories and the achievement test, were verified by an expert in the field of writing books for elementary students in grade 3 to 4. Each of the eight conditions lasted for 25 minutes. The results of the study were analyzed using the Three Way Analysis of Variance. It was found that no matter what combination of web features was presented, there was no significant difference in the comprehension and retention of the participants..
