Description
Summary:This is a study on the Chinese and Filipino boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. The study aims to describe the different conflicts, which arises from the individual's environment, experienced by Chinese individuals who have had or presently have a Filipino boyfriend or girlfriend. Also, it aims to know the effects of these conflicts on their decisions to break up, marry or maintain the relationship with the Filipino boyfriend or girlfriend. The study employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interview for gathering data with an unstructured interview guide. The participants included 9 Chinese individuals, who are either married to a Filipino, currently involved with a Filipino boyfriend or girlfriend for at least 3 years or have already broken up with the Filipino boyfriend or girlfriend due to the conflicts experienced. The results presented the profile of participants on areas such as their domestic set-up, conflicts experienced, their decisions of maintaining, marrying or breaking up with their Filipino boyfriends or girlfriends, and the effects of their coping decisions. The finding of the study showed that Chinese-Filipino relationships are still considered a taboo in the Chinese community based on the conflicts the participants have experienced. Furthermore, those who coped the conflict by choosing to marry or maintain their relationships with their Filipino boyfriends or girlfriends were those individuals who have the courage and the will to fight for the relationship. Whereas those who coped by breaking up are those individuals who are weak to overcome the conflicts they encountered.
