The perceptions of Japanese residents in the Philippines about the role of Filipino women

This study examined the perceptions of the Japanese people towards the Filipino women, comparing their perceptions while they were still in Japan with those formed during their stay here in the Philippines. The major aspects that were looked into were about the role of the Filipina in the family, business and politics. Age, sex and length of stay in the Philippines were the main factors considered that would affect the perceptions of the respondents. The descriptive research design was used to characterize and categorize the perceptions of the Japanese residents. A descriptive evaluation was then used in presenting the factors that affected the perception. The twenty nine respondents were selected using the purposive non-probability snowball sampling design. An interview guide for the key informant interviews and an interview schedule for interview surveys were formulated. Furthermore, literature related to the topic were also cited to provide further knowledge about the study. The study revealed that Japanese men seems to have more favorable views regarding the Filipino women. The respondents were also much more moderate in expressing their opinions about the role of the Filipina in the family than in the aspects of business and politics. Stronger agreement on the statements about the Filipina in business and politics were seen. It was also found that the respondents did not know much about the Filipina and majority of them had a positive change in their perceptions after staying in the Philippines. Finally, the study concluded that Japanese residents here in Metro Manila generally have favorable perceptions regarding the role of the Filipino women in today's society.
