Description
Summary:Uptake of the heavy metal lead (Pb) by the floating fern Salvinia natans Kunth, was studied using locally cultivated plant samples and standard solutions of Pb2+. The metal concentration reduction was quite rapid at room temperature and normal photosynthetic conditions. Lead concentrations (approximately 10 ppm at t=0), monitored using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), were below the method detection limit after less than one hour of exposure. The potential of Salvinia natans in aquatic phytoremediation was established.
