Description
Summary:Expert systems are programs that solve problems or give advice. There are many classifications of expert systems. One of them is the diagnostic system. This study focused on the development of the Pulmonary Diseases Expert System (PDES), a diagnostic system for pulmonary diseases. The unavailability of the doctor was the primary reason for the development of such system. The patient's symptoms were the starting point from which the system generated significant and meaningful conclusions. After the user of the system had entered all the patient's symptoms, the knowledge base of the expert system was inferred. After the inferencing process, the top 3 possible sicknesses based on the given symptoms were determined. The system enabled the user to see the corresponding medications for the derived sicknesses. It was also possible that the doctor already had a hypothesis of what sickness the patient was experiencing based on the symptoms. The doctor had to input the hypothesis together with the symptoms. The system was able to determine the probability of that sickness after inferencing. The former was referred to as forward chaining while the latter was backward chaining. These were the two inferencing mechanisms used by PDES. In order to enhance the current diagnostic system, graphic images of the pulmonary system could be incorporated into PDES. The results of physical examinations, X-rays, and the patient's medical history could also be considered in the diagnosis. This will result in a more accurate diagnosis of the patient's present physical condition.
