Generativity among Filipino mothers and fathers

In aiming to study generativity expressed by middle-aged Filipino parents, the researchers wanted to know whether gender, educational attainment, and religious orientation are determinants of the expressions of generativity among Filipino middle-aged parents. Investigations were made focusing on the four life areas - work, family, personal interests, and community involvement. In this research, descriptive design was employed and the method used was semi-structured in-depth interview. An interview guide was constructed to generate answers regarding the problems of this study. Allport and Ross's Religious Orientation Scale (ROS) was used as the measurement to identify the religious orientation of the participants. There were 48 middle-aged Filipino mothers and fathers who were chosen purposively to participate in this study. Results revealed that the foremost goal of generativity among Filipino mothers and fathers is the performance of their primary role as parents. Among the three determinants, gender is a determinant of generativity expressed in community involvement life area. With respect to the educational attainment of the participants, it is indicated that the higher the level of education, the broader the context for individuals to outwardly express generativity. Whereas the expression of generativity of the less educated individuals are more family centered. Furthermore, as individuals become more religiously authentic, the more generative they become. With regards to community involvement, participants view this life area as beyond their primary responsibility. Lastly, culture plays an important role in the expressions of generativity displayed by the participants in this study.
