With an advent of new technologies and new ways of representing data, files have begun to take up more and more storage space in many computer systems worldwide. Coupled with the introduction and expansion of the World Wide Web, many computer users have looked to data compression in order to make it easier and cheaper for them to transmit files across local networks and the World Wide Web and to maximize the storage capacity of their storage systems, Consequently, many archiving software and data compression algorithms have been developed. Each archive format thus has its own implementation of a particular compression algorithm, which is used to compress all input files regardless of its file structure and file format. This research aims to discover if an improvement can be achieved in terms of a larger decrease in file size and, if so, to determine statistically if the improvement made is proportional to the amount of time that the entire data compression process takes, by analyzing the structure of data in files, exploiting the distinct characteristics of certain data/file types, and choosing an appropriate data compression algorithm to compress each of the parts of the files, e.g., text, images, links to videos, etc. 2007-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/14409 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Computer Sciences |
