Spin coating is a method of coating substrates with certain fluid resins. The process involves attaching the substrate onto the rotary/spinner motor, dropping the fluid resin on top of the substrate's surface, spinning the substrate to spread the fluid across the surface of the substrate, and finally letting it dry. The objective of spin coating is to form uniform and thin films on substrates. Polymers are the most common fluids that are being spin coated onto substrates. But spin coaters are not that common to society, as the prices of the spin coater models are often times too expensive and impractical. The expensive price is mainly due to its hardware construction, specifically the hardware part wherein substrates are to be attached. Often times, vacuum is used under the spin chuck to suck/stick the substrate onto the spinner motor's spin chuck, and vacuum machines are very expensive and not cost-efficient. LCD screens are also not absolutely necessary but some spin coaters offers this feature, but this also contributes to the high prices of spin coaters. The thesis group will aim to develop a low-cost portable spin coater that will have the same basic functions as those of common spin coater models available in the market. Employing cheaper means of substrate attachment, cheap dispenser motors, and cheap spinner motor will be accomplished. Eliminating the confinement of unnecessary features that are contributing to the overall cost of spin coaters is also an objective, as only the vital features will be developed to make the cost as low as possible.
