Summary: | The sponsoring company, MAPECON, requires a production upgrade upon foreseeing a possible expansion to the market. This thesis project aims to design and fabricate a sticker labeling machine which is adjustable to two sizes, the 500-mL plastic container and a 120-mL glass bottle.
The proponents started by first creating a prototype with the basic parts of an in-feed labeling machine which were noticed from the international counterparts: conveyor, spacer, labeler, and wrapper. From there, another machine made of sturdier materials was fabricated. The proponents equipped the machine with two speed settings, automatic and manual features and an emergency stop, overcurrent protection and control of machine via a programmable relay was done, as well as control of motor speed with frequency inverters. Choosing of sensors, although with specs, still required the trial-and-error to test out their effectiveness on the sticker/gap detection. The velocity increase problem was solved by not including a receiving reel.
After designing, the machine had two experiments, each with 20 trials. Results showed that it was able to achieve its goal to label the two types of bottle, by reaching a constant rate of 34 bottles per minute at 90% efficiency rate for the glass bottle and 63% efficiency rate for the plastic bottle. Overall the machine can speed up the production of Mapecon, but some improvements should still be done to increase its efficiency rate. |
