This thesis is mainly concerned with ensuring the privacy and integrity of text and image files. A past thesis entitled Hardware implementation of RSA Cryptography in FPGA Interfaced with a Secure Digital Card Reader (Ang et al, November 2007) introduced an innovative form of Cryptography using the FPGA technology and interfacing it with a Secure Digital (SD) Card Reader. This past thesis will be the basis for our current study. This thesis group will implement a different cryptographic algorithm which is the International Data Encryption Algorithm or IDEA on an FPGA-based System. This thesis group will mainly design an FPGA-Based Encryption and Decryption System implemented using IDEA Cryptography for text and image files. The group's objective basically includes the interfacing of the SD Card to the DE2 Board and to the host computer which enables the user to access the SD Card. Accessing the SD Card includes the reading and writing of data to the SD Card. One important objective as well is the implementation of IDEA in the system so as to perform encryption and decryption to the text and image files. This will be done using the Nios II Processor Core on the DE2 Development Board.
