The group chose this study based from observations since manual collation involves repetitive motion which can result to fatigue thus affecting performance. Print orders in the company can reach up to a thousand sets. The Semi-automated signature gathering machine can help in accomplishing the print order.
The group first conducted observations and also took anthropometric data from the female workers of Brown Madonna. The group also took note of the steps or procedures in manual collation which could also contribute to the design basis of the machine. The group also obtained some design ideas from the machines they use for binding. Pneumatic components were used in order to mimic the actual collation process done by a worker. This is the component of choice. It is easier to use since the extending action of the cyliner resembles the way a worker extends and grabs a book paper signature. A rotary encoder and PLC were used in order to properly control the timing and positioning of the components with one another.
The machine underwent several experimentations in order to obtain a relevant data to check if the group's objectives have been met. The machine has a recommended speed of 20 Hz based from experimentation since the errors from the tested speeds are not far from each other. |
