Summary: | Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is one of the leading causes of death for infants aged one year and below. There are precautions to minimize SIDS to ensure that the infant does not have difficulty in breathing at any time. Ensuring these precautions are met at all times is difficult, particularly if the infant is not supervised throughout the day.
The project aims to help parents feel confident that the infant is safe. This is useful if the parents are doing household chores or sleeping in a separate room from the infant. The project also provides parents reassurance of their infant’s safety even when they are not physically with the child.
The system utilizes a computer and an electronic stethoscope in order to monitor the sleeping infant. The system monitors the vital signs of the infant and alerts the parents if the infant is a risk.
Various algorithms are used such as the enveloping algorithm, signal correlation and peak tracking algorithm just to name a few. These are used to make the signal be clearer and easier to process.
The system, upon conduction of overall system performance test under a controlled setup, obtained a percentage error ranging from 0.19% to 69.73% with a mean percentage error of 17.45% for the heart rate and a percentage error ranging from 2.73% to 115.11% with mean percentage error of 38.34% for the respiration rate. |
