Description
Summary:This paper analyzes the performance of a selected Power Line communications (PLC) modem in both ideal and noisy environments in a home setting, and also presents a design for a filtering device capable of improving communication. The noise encountered in communication comes from electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the power lines, which is produced by simultaneously operating electrical loads within the home. The design makes use of a common mode filter for suppressing the interference. For the purpose of observation, an AC analyzer and total harmonics distortion (THD) meter are employed. THD is a measurement of the level of harmonic content in alternating signals.
