Poblete, Carmelita S. This paper is about a case study on the Pook Kalinisan program which was implemented in Barrio Pitogo, a former urban poor community. It aims to determine the barrio's history and socio-economic profile of its residents the development and implementation of the program in the barrio the perceived effects of the program on the resident's health, the barrio's peace and order situation, livelihood projects, the residents' environmental consciousness and on community cohesiveness how cleanliness is being maintained in the barrio and the prospects of the community's leaders and residents for the barrio.Data provided by the key informants and documents revealed that government and non-government organizations conceptualized the program and initiated its implementation. In addition to this, the government assisted the barrio by providing services such as garbage collection and the declogging of canals. Non-government organizations on the other hand, contributed to the program their financial, material and moral support. The rest depended on the community's participation, cooperativeness of its residents and on the leaders and residents initiative to create a clean, orderly and peaceful environment.Their joint effort proved to be fruitful, as positive effects resulted from the program's direct or indirect influence. The residents' health improved the barrio's peace and order situation controlled livelihood projects came about the residents became more conscious of their environment and Barrio Pitogo's residents became more united.Maintaining cleanliness was instilled in the people's minds, that every community member cleans his surroundings. The barangay leaders monitor the environment for any problems, and act towards solving them. The residents are also continuously being educated on environmental sanitation.It is suggested that a broader study be conducted, comparing the experiences of all Pook Kalinisan program recepients.
