A comparative study of the views of masculinity and femininity of male and female Filipino adolescents who have single parents and complete parents

This study aimed to determine the concept of masculinity and femininity along the physical, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of male and female adolescents who are raised by single parents and complete parents, and if there are significant differences in their concepts.The subjects of this study consisted of 40 adolescents (20 males and 20 females) with single parents and the same number of adolescents with complete parents. This study made use of survey questionnaires to determine the adolescents concepts of masculinity and femininity. The researchers distributed the questionnaires to approximately 1,500 high school students in Paco Catholic School, and randomly picked the 80 subjects.This study made use of the two factor analysis of variance to determine if there are significant differences between the sex of adolescent and parental composition of adolescents' concepts of masculinity and femininity. It also made use of the t-test to determine if there are significant differences between the means of the four groups of respondents. The mean scores to each of the statements in the questionnaire were also compared. Content analysis was used to analyze the open-ended questions.The results showed that there are no significant differences (in the .05 level of significance) between the sex of adolescents and parental composition to the adolescents concepts of masculinity and femininity along the physical, emotional, and behavioral dimensions. The t-test showed that there are no significant differences in the mean scores of the 4 groups of subjects. Responses to the open-ended questions showed that male and female adolescents, either with single or complete parents, adhere to the stereotype concepts of masculinity and femininity.Based on the results, it was concluded that parental composition and sex of adolescent do not affect the adolescents' concepts of masculinityand femininity because of several reasons.
