Summary: | This study aimed to determine the reasons why lesbian couples foster children and raise them as their own. Included in the study are the socio-demographic profile of the respondents, the factors that affect their decision to foster, the reasons why lesbian couples foster children, the perceived gains of fostering children, the perceived difficulties that they had in fostering, and their child-rearing strategies. The respondents have been cohabitating respectively for at least three years and have fostered children. The study revealed that lesbian couples are mostly college degree holders, mostly businesswomen, high income earners, and have a long duration of relationship with their partners with an average of fourteen years. The fostering of children could either be planned or unplanned by the couples. The perceived gains of the couples are: emotional and financial security. The perceived difficulties of the lesbian couples are: fear of abandonment, non-acceptance of their relationship by their fostered children, etc. |
