Description
Summary:Virtual Acoustics system is a device built around the theory of psychoacoustics. It focuses on the subject of sounds and how they are heard. The prototype is made to aid the realism of simulated sound via the user's position. It consists of two components: the hardware and the software. The hardware is composed of an audio generator as a source of audio input, an acoustic manipulator, a computer to control the manipulator, a headphone where the output can be heard, and the interface that provides the link between the acoustic manipulator and the computer. The acoustic manipulator is further be divided into sub-modules which include the following: mixers, differential amplifier, graphic equalizer, echo and delay circuits, volume control, filters, and headphone amplifiers. The software performs the manipulations over the acoustic manipulator. By altering the logic fed in the data lines and referring to specific outport addresses, the components of the acoustic manipulator are tapped. Moreover, the software provides the logical graphics area where the user could traverse. This area is a top view screen of a particular predefined room with a dimension of approximately 50 X 50 ft. Working on analog signal processing instead of digital signal processing, a number of limitations and constraints faces the system. The prototype works only on the horizontal plane. The single audio source is stationary and that only the user could move around the logical graphics area. It should also be noted that a head tracking system is outside the scope of the thesis.
