Summary:The thesis project involves the use of a magnetic striped card reader and writer connected to a microprocessor. The reader reads the data from the magnetic stripe and then sends the data to the microprocessor. After analyzing the data, the microprocessor then sends the new data on the magnetic stripe. The card reader is the one reading the data out of the magnetic strip. The reader use a magnetic head in converting magnetic flux into electrical signals. The data read by the card reader will be sent to the processor for processing. The card writer will handle the writing of processed data back to the magnetic strip. The writer also uses a magnetic head to convert electrical signals to magnetic flux. The written data will serve as the new data of the magnetic strip. Since new data are to be written on the strip, there is a need to erase the current data on the magnetic strip. This is done by the card eraser. If passed to this eraser, the stored data on the strip will be reoriented and will now be ready to accept new data. The card reader and writer modules act accordingly and is controlled by the microprocessor which is a Z80 microprocessor. It controls the over all operation of the system through its input and output ports. Upon entering the station, the commuter inserts the card into a slot which writes a code on the card indicating his point of entry. Upon reaching his destination, the commuter will have to insert the card once more into a similar slot which reads the data on the card. The microprocessor will process the data to determine the fare that will be deducted from the account balance on the card. The fare that will be deducted will depend on the distance travelled by the commuter. The data on the card is updated with the new balance. The commuter can keep on using the card until it reaches zero balance.
