Description
Summary:An exploratory study was conducted regarding the employment of physically-challenged individuals in a business organization, specifically an insurance company. The objective of the study is determined the perceptions of the management in employing physically-challenged individuals. Likewise, it looked into the views and experiences of able-bodied employees in working with physically-challenged employees in the insurance company were explored. The researchers carried out an in-depth interview in the insurance company. The researchers conducted a pre-test of the interview guides to an auto assistance company. The interview had three types of key-informants namely the management, the able-bodied employees, and the physically-challenged employees. There were also three types of interview guides for each group of key-informants. Two (2) key-informants came from the management, fifteen (15) able-bodied employees were interviewed as key-informants, and there were nine (9) physically-challenged key-informants. The data gathered from the interview was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The study showed that the major reasons why the management hires physically-challenged individuals is because of humanitarian reasons the belief that in spite of their physical condition, the physically-challenged are still capable of working and the physically-challenged individuals have met the characteristics and skills needed for the position. Productivity and diligence in work are the contributions of the physically-challenged individuals in the organization. The pressing difficulties that the three key-informants experience are in communication and mobility. The three (3) types of key-informants are positive that the organization will continue to hire physically-challenged individuals. However, the management does not have intentions of providing programs and facilities for the physically-challenged employees. Meanwhile, the able-bodied and the physically-challenged individuals cited additional allowance and benefits, training and rehabilitation programs, and improvement of facilities as important considerations needed to improve the work environment of the physically-challenged individuals in the organization.
