| Summary: | The study explored the relationship between character strengths and thinking styles and their influence on academic achievement in mathematics and social studies. 127 participants from a high school in Metro Manila took part in the study. Character strengths based on five factors (cognitive, emotional, conative, interpersonal and transcendence) were measured by a 100-item inventory. Thinking styles were measured using TSI-R2 (Sternberg, Wagner & Zhang, 2007), consisting of 65 statements with five statements corresponding to 13 thinking styles. Exploratory factor analysis determined two categories of thinking styles: Independent Thinking and Collaborative Thinking. Scales of character strengths were correlated with thinking styles, both character strengths and thinking styles were correlated with academic achievement in mathematics and social studies. Several multiple-regression analyses were performed and results indicated that thinking styles are a better predictor of academic achievement than character strengths. |
