Correlation of emotional intelligence and leadership among student- leaders: Goleman's four competencies

Emotional intelligence has been studied extensively. Daniel Goleman's competency model, which divides emotional intelligence into self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management, is one of the most supported. The researchers tested the Goleman model by measuring the emotional intelligence and leadership of management student-leaders of two prestigious universities. Results showed that each of Goleman's four competencies was significantly correlated with leadership, although the correlation between social awareness and leadership was slightly weaker. The researchers recommend including emotional intelligence training in the curriculum in order to aid in leadership development of students.
