The impact of corporate social responsibility to financial performance in selected universal banks in the Philippines

This paper assesses the effect of a universal bank's corporate social responsibility on their financial performance. The proponents investigated the impact of CSR activities as represented by the universal banks' CSR scores with their profitability. Phase I employed a 30-item questionnaire that aided in ranking the banks based on their CSR activities in relation to the owners, employees and the community. Phase II used the ROE, ROA and NIM data taken from the financial statements. A simple and multiple regression analysis were performed to establish the impact of CSR to financial performance. The bank with the highest CSR score does not directly indicate that it also has the highest rank in terms of its financial performance. Findings showed that universal banks which practices CSR tend to have a better financial performance as measured by ROE and ROA, while NIM showed to have a weak relationship with CSR.
