The spatial and temporal distribution of particulate matter along Taft Avenue, Manila from Quirino Avenue to Pablo Ocampo
Particulate matters are small pieces of matter, either solid or liquid, originating from the combustion of wood and fossil fuels, burning of incense, oxidation of gases. Particulate matter can be classified into coarse, fine, and ultrafine particles. Long term exposure of fine particulate matter suc...

They have a large effect on the average life expectancy of the people exposed to it. It was found that a higher mortality rate, a generally shorter lifespan and lung damage were some of the effects that long term exposure to PMs had. Hence, understanding and determining how harmful the exposing air that we breathe could be a cause for developing new ways to reduce air pollution and reduce the risk of health effects. The researchers sought to measure the concentrations of particulate matter, specifically PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4 (only TSI), PM10, along Taft Avenue Manila, to be able to find their spatial and temporal distribution, as well as to find any correlations they may have with humidity, temperature and wind speed. Mobile measurements were done in 19 checkpoints from Quirino to Vito Cruz, with the use of the Air Quality Monitoring Station and the DustTrak DRX 8533 Desktop. The researchers found that there was a large correlation between concentration and wind speed, temperature, and humidity; with humidity having the only positive correlation. The researchers also found a negative relationship between concentrations and traffic levels, with lighter traffic often giving higher readings. Particulate matter along Taft was also found to be more concentrated near Quirino and less near Vito Cruz, with higher readings as well in the Abstract Particulate matters are small pieces of matter, either solid or liquid, originating from the combustion of wood and fossil fuels, burning of incense, oxidation of gases.
