Summary:A study on the effects of different combinations of volcanic ash and farm wastes (ipil-ipil leaves, chicken manure, mongo pods and rice straw) on the growth of pechay (Brassica chinensis, Linne) was done. Pechay was planted in seven treatment combinations of volcanic ash, farm wastes and soil (3:1 1:1 1:3 1:2 2:1 2:3 3:2). Pure ash and pure soil were used as the control groups. The parameters that were determined included leaf area in cm., fresh weight and dry weight in grams of leaf and petiole, NPK in percent and chlorophyll content in mg/ml. Treatments of varying concentrations of volcanic ash and farm waste yielded better pechay compared to the control groups using ANOVA in CRD and DMRT at 0.05 level. Treatment five (5) containing 2:1 volcanic ash and farm wastes ratio was found to be the most suitable substrate for the growth of pechay (Brassica chinensis, Linn) in terms of leaf mean area (301.34 cm.), mean fresh weight (61.46g) and mean dry weight (4.73 g) of leaves and petiole, mean chlorophyll content (3.02 mg/ml), plus plant tissue N (0.41 percent), P (0.28 percent) and K (1.87 percent).Best results of pechay in treatment 5 could be attributed to the statistically significant amount of N (0.46 percent), phosphorus (0.68 percent) and potassium (0.65 percent) present in the substrate which are essential elements contributing to the greater growth of the plant.
