The effect of arsenic pentoxide on the hematocrit and osmotic fragility of erythrocites of the Gallus gallus white leghorn chicken

Red blood cells of sexually-mature female white leghorn chicken Gallus gallus were exposed to serial concentrations of arsenic pentoxide ranging from 0 to 1000 mg/L to assess its hematoxic effects in terms of concentration-related changes in osmotic fragility and packed cell volume (hematocrit).Based on a percent hemolysis-concentration curve, red blood cells exposed to increasing concentrations of arsenic pentoxide resulted to an increase in percent hemolysis which reflected an increase in osmotic fragility. Similarly, the hematocrit-concentration curve revealed a decrease in the recorded values as the concentration of the heavy metal increased (5 to 45 mg/L). Statistical analysis confirmed a significant concentration-dependent hematoxic effect of arsenic pentoxide on chicken red blood cells (p0.05) from 15 to 45 mg/L.
