Description
Summary:Water samples were collected once a month during the months of October, November and December 1993 at three stations in Malabon-Navotas River. Light penetration (cm) and water temperature (C) were measured using a secchi disk and a thermometer respectively. Chemical factors, such as phosphates (mg/1) and nitrates (mg/1) were determined using the spectronic 20 (Bausch & Lomb) dissolved oxygen by Winkler's method, pH using a pH meter (Hach portable) and salinity using a salinity/conductivity/temperature meter (YSI).The phytoplankton were comprised of Rhizosolenia hebetata forma semispina (Hensen) Gran, R. robusta Norman, Climacosphenia moniligera Ehrenberg, Nitzschia closterium W. Smith, N. lanceola W. Smith, N. seriata Cleve, N. vitrea Norman, Pleurosigma intermedium W. Smith, Synedra ulna Ehrenberg var. ulna, Oscillatoria quadripunctulata var. unigranulata Singh, and Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve. The phytoplankton belonged to two divisions (Chrysophyta and Cyanophyta), two classes (Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae), three orders (Centrales, Pennales and Nostocales), six families (Rhizosoleniaceae, Skeletonemaceae, Fragilariaceae, Nitzschiaceae, Tabellariaceae and Oscillatoriaceae), seven genera (Rhizosolenia, Skeletonema, Pleurosigma, Synedra, Nitzschia, Climacosphenia and Oscillatoria) and eleven species (Rhizosolenia hebetata forms semispina, R. robusta, Skeletonema costatum, Pleurosigma intemedium, Synedra ulna, Nitzschia closterium, N. lanceolata, N. seriata, N. vitrea, Climacosphenia moniligera and Oscillatoria quadripunctulata var. unigranulata).
