A critical analysis of Lualhati Bautista's Ang Baliw using Roland Barthes' codes of narration

Lualhati Bautista's novel Ang Baliw is analyzed using Roland Barthes' codes of narration. The codes are divided into five different functions for which the elements are classified under. They are the proairetic, the hermeneutic, the semic and symbolic, and the cultural. The actions, enigmas, symbols, themes, and plots are identified using the codes then analyzed to determine their specific function and purpose. The functions are then interrelated to produce an in-depth analysis of the narrative.The proairetic code led to the construction of the summary of plots. The hermeneutic code also provided for the construction of the summary of plots through the questions that were provided in the narrative. The semic and symbolic codes fleshed out the character development and the prevailing themes. The cultural code identified cultural aspects in society coded in the narrative.
