Summary: | Salmonella typhimurium was inoculated into five different kinds of reconstituated children and infant milk powder. The brands of milk were chosen based on how close their price were relative to the average prices of the milk brands in their respective milk category. The milk type used were: children's milk (Enfapro), children's milk with soya (Twin), infant formula (S-26), infant formula with soya (Nursoy), and goat milk (Meyenberg).Reconstitution was done aseptically. Colony forming units per ml were determined on an hourly interval for four hours. The mean generation time was computed for the organism grown in each milk sample.Salmonella typhimurium grew well in all the milk media tested, since it continued to divide from the time of inoculation up to the fourth hour. Lag phase was surpassed within the first hour.Salmonella typhimurium grew best in goat milk. This was followed by growth in children's milk. Growth in infant formula with soy, children's milk with soya, and infant formula equally followed in children's milk. |
