Description
Summary:Skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues obtained from 125 Pietrain Breed swines from San Juan Municipal Slaughter House were assessed for Sarcocystis infection using muscle tissue smear examination. Tissue samples were collected from April to November, 1994. Swines examined ranged from four-month (15.20 percent) to five-month (33.60 percent) and six-month (51.20 percent) old. Likewise, eighty (64 percent) swines were male and forty-five (45 percent) were females. Only one positive case of Sarcocystis infection was noted in a skeletal muscle tissue obtained from a 6-month old swine. Sarcocystis infection was demonstrated by the presence of a very young developing sarcocyst ( metrocyte ).
