The broad spectrum anti-fungal activity of miconazole cream in the treatment of otomycosis caused by Candida albicans was discussed in this paper. Thirty randomly selected rabbits were used and divided into three groups, composed of ten rabbits in each group. The rabbits have undergone two phases of tests in order to determine the safety of miconazole cream in the untreated ears of rabbits and the effectivity of miconazole cream in treating otomycosis. The external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane were the only biological sites studied and experimental upon. Cultured Candida albicans was implanted in the experimental ears of rabbits for the growth of candidiasis infection, otomycosis. The subjects were treated with miconazole cream to determine its effectivity in treating otomycosis. Results were all shown in percentages in order to know the severity of the adverse reactions for the 100 percent reactivity manifested by the rabbits. The statistical mode (frequently occuring value) was also used for the most frequently occuring reactions in which the rabbits manifested during and after the application of miconazole cream. Based on the results, moderate hyperemia, minimal hyperemia with swollen eadrum and burning sensations, appeared to be the most frequently occuring adverse reactions exhibited by the rabbits. The manifestation of these adverse reactions in the three types of miconazole cream application (once, twice and thrice) showed that twice daily miconazole cream application is the best dosage in terms of the less severity of adverse reactions manifested by the rabbits. On the other hand, a high percentage of absolute inhibition (90 percent) of the growth of Candida albicans manifested in the thrice daily miconazole cream treatment, due to the increased dose of miconazole cream in the rabbits ears.
