A comparative study of the antimicrobial activity of the three Philippine species of Pittosporum

Crude extracts from three Philippine species of Pittosporum were screened for the presence of antimicrobial activity against some medically important microorganisms using the Agar Cup method. Minimum Inhibitory Concentrating were also determined using the Plate Assay method. The 3 Philippine species of Pittosporum tested were Pittosporum pentandrum. These were extracted using mortar and pestle with Chloroform as the solvent and were tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.All three plants extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity except for Pittosporum resiniferum against Candida albicans. Only the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Pittospurum mollucanum and Pittosporum pentandrum in Trichophyton mentagrophytes were determined at concentrations of 1000 ug and 2500 ug of plant extracts respectively.
