Description
Summary:Five sampling sites were chosen to assess the water quality of Lawaye River in San Juan, Batangas. The river is classified as belonging to Fresh Surface Water Class B. The physico-chemical and bacteriological properties of water were monitored from January 1994 to March 1994. The results of the study were compared with the standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The following parameters were measured for water from each sampling site : temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, total solids and total coliforms. Based on the results obtained, the physico-chemical properties of water from all sites conformed with the standards set by the DENR. Bacteriological property was determined by determining the presence and amount of coliform through the Total Coliform Most Probable Number (MPN) Test. The result of the bacteriological quality assessment of water from the three sampling sites used for swimming, bathing, laundry and fishing conformed with the DENR standard. However, the two sampling sites which were used for garbage dumping showed abundant presence of total coliforms which exceeded the standard.
