Summary: | Eight bacterial isolates from soil collected in Sitio Kay Reyna, Barangay Lumanyag, Lian, Batangas were screened for antimicrobial activity on three Gram-negative pathogens (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi), a Gram-positive pathogen (Staphylococcus aureus), and a fungus (Candida albicans). Forty bacterial isolates numbers 1, 4, 8, 9, 17, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 31, 32, 33, 34, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 51, 59, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 78, and 80 showed inhibitory activity to at least one of the test organisms. Thirty-five (87.5) out of these forty bacterial isolates capable of antimicrobial activity inhibited the growth of Salmonella typhi except isolate numbers 1, 4, 8, 9, and 17. Twenty-three bacterial isolates (57.5) numbers 4, 8, 9, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 33, 34, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, and 67 were tested positive against Escherichia coli. Nineteen bacterial isolates (47.5) numbers 4, 8, 9, 17, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 31, 33, 34, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, and 59 inhibited Candida albicans and only sixteen bacterial isolates (40) numbers 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 59, 68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 78, and 80 inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Gram reaction, morphology and colonial characteristics of bacterial isolates with antimicrobial activity were also described. |
