Irritancy and allergenicity of commercially available skin whiteners on albino rabbits

Three commercially available skin whiteners, namely Block & White, Epiderm-A, Fashion 21, were tested using a modified form of the Draize test. Rabbits wer inducted with the lotions via an intradermal injection at the axilla and inguinal regions. Two controls, a negative using normal saline solution and a positive using Tretinoin, were used. The sites were observed and graded for all the animals. A week after the induction the animals were again subjected to the test substances in the challenge phase. The rabbits were again observed for reactions.Using the Wilcoxon rank sum test at a 0.05 level of significance the tested animals were compared with the negative control. It was found out that Fashion 21 proved to be negative for allergic reactions. On the other hand, Block & White and Epiderm-A showed varying results.
