Description
Summary:A study was conducted to determine the effects of Caesalpinia sappan (sibucao) wood decoction on RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit of male Swiss mice. Eighteen male mice were divided into 3 groups with 3 replicates and 3 controls. Treated mice were force-fed with decoction after the initial blood tests. The first group received 1 ml/kg body weight, the second with 1.5 ml/kg body weight and the third with 2 ml/kg body weight of wood decoction. Control mice were force-fed with water. Blood test were conducted at the start of the experiment and every seven days for 2 consecutive weeks of administration of decoction. As the concentration of decoction is increased and as administration is prolonged, the 3 groups of mice significantly increase their RBC count, hemoglobin and hematocrit. The mice group given 2 ml/kg decoction had the greatest increase in RBC count, from 5.5 M/mm to 6.2 M/mm. Hemoglobin content initially was 198.33 g/L and then went up to 231.67 g/L. Hematocrit increased from 53.67 % to 63.33 %.
